Exploring Disney Sea Part 4: Food!

Disney Sea offers some amazing food!

One of my absolute favorites of Tokyo Disney, besides the amazing souvenirs, is all the awesome food! I have to admit, after noshing around Tokyo Disneyland and Sea, Anaheim Disneyland fell pretty flat for me. Aside from the Dole Whip, monte cristo, and the most amazing chocolate swirl ice cream cone at the California Adventure pier (whose awesomeness was probably 50% contributed to the heat), there's not a lot of stuff I get excited for here. I'd say some of that has to do with the fact that Tokyo Disney always features changing menu items throughout the year. Case in point, when I discovered a Disney magazine in Japan I always studied it carefully before going to the park so I would know exactly what to eat and what to buy. Let's face it  a day at Disneyland is not a day to be on a diet! There is so much good food at Tokyo Disneyland and Sea I recommend eating light throughout the day so you can try everything!

First off, let's talk about popcorn. Because popcor is a big thing at TDL/S. You'll even see Disney popcorn bracelets attached to young people's bags and wonder what the big deal is. This is not your standard buttered popcorn! TDL/S proudly features a tasty array of popcorn flavors, from savory to sweet: soy sauce and butter, curry, salt, BBQ, caramel, milk chocolate, honey, and even strawberry.

Get a popcorn bucket for free refills on all popcorn at Disney Sea, including milk chocolate.

Why have regular old butter popcorn when you could have black pepper popcorn?
Half the fun of trying all the different flavors is buying a popcorn bucket, which come in all sorts of characters! If you purchase the bucket (around $25), you get free refills for the rest of the day

Of course these popcorn buckets have to be extra cute.

You can use these to store anything at home, and take it back to get free refills on popcorn!
It makes for the perfect on-the-go snack, especially while you're waiting in line. In my opinion, no trip to TDL/S is complete without curry popcorn! The smell is irresistible and will lead you straight to it from anywhere in the park.

Follow your nose to the curry popcorn!
Restaurants

Like Disneyland, Tokyo Disney Sea offers a lot of great places to eat! There are plenty of restaurants to choose from (click here for the full list).

Mediterranean Harbor

Magellan's at Mediterranean Harbor.
Mediterranean Harbor has plenty of Italian restaurants to choose from: Cafe Portofino (lasagna, Italian style pasta), Gondolier Snacks (gelato), Zambini Brothers Ristorante (pasta, pizza, and gratin), Magellan's (upscale dining), Mamma Biscotti's Bakery (sandwich, bakery goods, and sweet manju), Ristorante di Canaletto (Italian fine dining), Refrescos (turkey legs).

American Waterfront

Cape Cod Cook-Off serves burgers and sweets.
The American Waterfront is chock full of places to grab a bite, from casual to upscale dining: Cape Cod Cook-Off (burgers and sweets), Cape Cod Confections (Duffy-themed sweets), Sailing Day Buffet, The Teddy Roosevelt Lounge (upscale dining), Delancey Catering (hot dogs), New York Deli (sandwiches), High Tide Treats (tipa torta), Hudson River Harvest (roast chicken and baked potato with cheese sauce; Mickey shaped castella filled with caramel cream), Barnacle Bill's (sausage), Liberty Landing Diner (pork roll stuffed with rice), and Restaurant Sakura (upscale Japanese dining).

If you're hankering for some good ol' American food, head straight for the American Waterfront.
Port Discovery

Inner-tube shaped shrimp buns at Seaside Snacks.
Port Discovery offers one of the most iconic snacks at Disney Sea, inner-tube shaped shrimp buns served at Seaside Snacks (shrimp buns), along with Breezeway Bites ("fried pizza" calzones, ice cream), Horizon Bay Restaurant (beef, hamburger, chicken, fish).

Lost River Delta

Tropic Al's serves the most delicious sweet fried burritos! You will definitely be back for seconds.
You'll find the two best handheld snacks in Lost River Delta at Tropic Al's (sweet fried burritos) and Expedition Eats (Yucatan sausage roll). Other options include Lost River Cookhouse (smoked turkey legs), Yucatan Base Camp Grill (smoked chicken, Mexican rice), Miguel's El Dorado Cantina (tacos, quesadillas, chips and salsa).

Arabian Coast

Sultan's Oasis in Arabian Coast.
Restaurants in the Arabian Coast include Sultan's Oasis (chicken cream buns, maple cream balls), Casbah Food Court (curry and naan), and Open Sesame (churros). If you've never tried Indian curry before, put Casbah Food Court on your list!

Casbah Food Court serves curry and naan.
Mermaid Lagoon

The full menu at Sebastian's Calypso Kitchen.
Mermaid Lagoon has just one restaurant under the sea: Sebastian's Calypso Kitchen, which serves fried shrimp patty on a sea shell shaped bun, pizza, and sweets. The yogurt mousses are served in adorable Flounder and Sebastian souvenir cups!

Mysterious Island

Mysterious Island is where you'll find excellent Chinese food, and churros too: Nautilus Galley (gyoza buns), Refreshment Station (churros), Vulcania Restaurant (Chinese).

Volcania serves delicious Chinese dishes.

Snacks

Let's take a closer look at some of the awesome food offered in each area of the park, starting with snacks. First up is Tropic Al's sweet fried burritos.

Sweet Fried Burrito (caramel and banana)

What could be better than a sweet fried burrito?

Caramel and banana inside!
The outside is flaky like crust and the inside is smooth and sweet!

Yucatan Sausage Roll: Lost River Delta

Grab a Yucatan Sausage Roll for an on-the-go snack.

Perfect bread to sausage ratio!
Basically a really good hot dog! The bun is really soft and the dog is seasoned really well. I even kept the wrapper as a cute souvenir!

I have a habit of saving cute wrappers. Don't judge me.
Steamed shrimp buns at Seaside Snacks in Port Discovery

It looks like Donald's swimming with the inner tube!
I love these! It's very similar to gyoza dogs as it's a steamed bun with shrimp filling, but it's so cute as an inner tube!

You can see Donald's little white tail on the other side of the wrapper.
It looks so attractive with the white and pink colors!

Inside is full of shrimp!
The inside is soft and delicious, served warm!

Chandu Tail: Open Sesame

Another snack almost the same as this one is a Chandu Tail, filled with cream chicken and corn, in the shape of Chandu's orange and black tail.

Chandu's Tail, filled with cream chicken and corn.

The shape is so cute!

You can see whole chunks of chicken and corn inside!
Very similar to the gyoza dog and shrimp bun, so it's nice to have some different fillings to choose from!

Hot-dog shaped gyoza buns.
If you like gyoza (potstickers), you'll love it in a steamed bun!

Dinner at Zambini Brothers' Ristorante

There's plenty of Italian dishes to choose from at Zambini Brothers', including pizza, pasta, salads, soup, and gratin.

A look at the menu at Zambini Brothers' Ristorante.

You can get a set with gratin, salad, a drink, and dessert.

Choose from pasta, pizza, or gratin.
My friend got the gratin (topped with an egg!) with salad-dessert set.

Gratin set.
I enjoyed the margherita pizza.

Margherita pizza at Zambini Brothers' Ristorante

It looks like a pretty standard pizza. I have to say that my absolute favorite pizza is served in Tomorrowland at Tokyo Disneyland. It's something I want to eat more than once when I visit!

Sweets

Tortas
Tipo torta, available in chocolate and sweet potato.
These are a crunchy, portable snack you've probably never heard of. They're much crunchier than a churro (almost hard), and have smooth filling inside.

Churros

Besides the popcorn, one of the best snacks to get at Tokyo Disney parks is a churro. Kudos to you if you're there around Halloween time to enjoy the pumpkin flavor. However, beware: churro lines can get really long since they're so popular, so don't be surprised if you have to wait 20 minutes for one.

Grab a pumpkin churro during Halloween.

The wrapper features scary Disney characters! You might want to save this one, too.
Sweet and a little crunchy! You can also get Mickey-shaped churros.

Mickey shaped churro.
Tiramisu Ice Cream Sandwich

Tiramisu ice cream sandwich.
This is a one-of-a-kind treat served only at Disney Sea! You can find it at ice cream carts around the park. It even looks cute thanks to the Mickey stamped on it! The tiramisu ice cream was a unique flavor to enjoy.

Mickey is almost too cute to eat!
Cream Cheese Brownie: American Waterfront

Authentic cheesecake brownies at the American Waterfront.
What could be more American than cheesecake and brownies? The latter is in short abundance in Japan, so make sure to grab one of these delicious cheesecake brownies before you leave the park.

Just what a cheesecake brownie is supposed to look like!
Sea Salt Ice Cream Monaka: Mermaid Lagoon

A popular Disney Sea treat is this ice cream "monaka" (ice cream encased in a thin wafer cake). You can find it in Mermaid Lagoon. The seashell shape is so cute!

Sea Salt Monakas sold here.
The package is very pretty!

Mermaid Minnie surrounded by Daisy and friends! Is she cuter than Ariel?
According to my friend, the flavor of the sea salt is very subtle, so it's mostly sweet! This is definitely an Instragrammable treat.

Perfectly shaped sea shell!
Sebastian's Calypso Kitchen: Mango Yogurt Mouse in souvenir cup

These are super adorable thanks to the souvenir cups! (You can also get this without the souvenir cup to save money). There's a wedge of pineapple, a little whip, and an edible fin on top.

Flounder's mango yogurt mousse.
The flavors of the Sebastian one is blood orange and passion fruit. This looks so adorable I would go back and get this just for the souvenir cup!

Blood orange and passion fruit yogurt mousse served up in a Sebastian cup.
Maple Cream Balls: Arabian Coast

Maple cream balls with chocolate syrup and peanuts.
Honestly these were a little disappointing: they tasted like very plain pancake balls.

Not quite enough "cream" filling for me.
The inside has a little maple cream. I would skip these and go back for another sweet fried burrito instead.

Gelato at Gondelier Snacks

Try some unique gelato flavors like grape and blood orange.
Ice cream afficionados can enjoy fresh gelato at Gondelier Snacks in Mediterranean Harbor. Flavors include chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, caramel, tiramisu, grape, blood orange, blueberry yogurt, peach yogurt, and green tea.

Recommended Christmas menu

In addition to all those great goodies served year-round, Disney also offers seasonal menu items, like this Christmas menu. Some of these look too cute to eat! I'm sure there are people who keep coming back to eat the special seasonal items every few months.

Strawberry-cranberry Minnie crepe

Chocolate churros

Basil chicken and cream danish, strawberry muffin, and grape gelatin.

"Special cocktail" at the Teddy Roosevelt Lounge

Omelet roll and dacquoise at Cape Cod Cook-Off

Hot dog with vegetable-basil sauce on white bread.

Orange-flavored Nemo and friends churro.
With all these yummy treats to choose from, your palate will definitely not have a boring day eating around Disney Sea! I can't say enough how great the food is at the Tokyo Disney parks – it's one of the best parts of the experience there. Next up is my other favorite thing about Tokyo Disney that definitely rivals America: souvenirs!
