A cozy evening at the Pompompurin Cafe |
If you know me, it's obvious that I love cute things (and not just Disney things!). When I was living in Yokohama, I knew I had to visit the Pompompurin Cafe at least once, and was more than pleased with the results!
The cafe is situated outside the station but in a very out-of-the-way location you won't find without a little bit of exploring. Sadly I was a bit short on time during my last month in Japan and had to squeeze this in after work one day, which was a chilly, rainy day. Thus I was at the cafe by myself, and also it was pretty empty inside, so it was a different kind of experience than visiting during peak hours. Luckily for me I have no qualms about solo-adventures, so I still enjoyed it thoroughly.
For those of you who don't know, Pompompurin is a
Sanrio character made to look like Japanese
purin, or pudding (which is topped with caramel sauce and similar to flan), and is actually a Golden Retriever. He has a girlfriend named Macaron and his friends are cute little animals with names like Custard, Bagel, and Scone.

The cafe is adorable even from the outside, with Pompompurin's body framing the door and the roof topped with caramel sauce. It looks like the quaint, cozy little house of a friend who's inviting you over to play.

He's dressed in a little sailor outfit unique only to this location. While this is a perfect photo-op opportunity, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed once you walk through the doors, because there's so much to see!

Being popular among women, dessert is doubtless the most ordered. You can try a Pompompurin "burger" with kiwi, mango, custard sauce, chocolate ice cream, and strawberry, and sweet potato "fries" with caramel dipping sauce.

Other items include cotton candy pancake, baked apple, fruit tart, chocolate banana parfait, and milk pudding.

Drinks are clearly also an extension of sweets (and also cost about as much!). You can get strawberry, kiwi, or mango soda with or without ice cream, caramel, green tea, strawberry milk, or cookies and cream lattes, chocolate or yogurt shakes, and a marshmallow latte. They even serve alcohol!

It was a chilly night, so I went with the beef stroganoff. I was dining alone, so I decided to eat with Pompompurin.

It was so delicious! My only complaint is how there's too much rice (as is a summary of my time spent in Japan) and I would have liked more stroganoff instead. But it sure is adorable!

For dessert, I opted for the milk pudding, served in a jar with a cookie "hat" and caramel sauce on the side (500 yen).

You can find the
Pompompurin Cafe at four different locations in Japan: Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Yokohama. The
Yokohama location is unique in that it's the only one where Pompompurin is dressed in a special sailor outfit. You can
access it from Yokohama stations via JR and Sotetsu lines, a short 2-5 minute walk outside the station.
